Artist’s Statement: “Ordnung” a dance, is a short film and is one part of a three part project including a qualitative survey and live performance. In 1972, the Supreme Court decision in Wisconsin v. Jonas Yoder, determined that children within Amish communities were only required to obtain up to an 8th grade education. It has been 48 years since the Wisconsin v. Yoder decision and we have seen many changes in the Anabaptist and English communities including the impact of  the environmental development, and human disruption of animal and plant habitat, on the  lifestyle of the Amish, from farming and agriculture, to industry and technology.  Many of the Anabaptist people, are being compelled into the English workforce without the formal education, and training they need to be competitive in the job market. This project attempts to increase awareness and to help facilitate a bridge to education and career goals for the Anabaptist communities.

Joan Van Dyke is an Associate Professor of Dance, and affiliate faculty for Women’s Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She serves as resident choreographer and director of IUP Dance Theater, and is the Artistic Director for the Mahoning Valley Ballet. Van Dyke is an invited choreographer, lecturer, and educator, nationally, and internationally.

Jeremy Waltman is a director, writer, professor, and artist. He creates character-driven stories in all genres and most mediums. His film casts have included Migs Govea (Oceans 8), Joshua Mikel (The Walking Dead), Rya Kihlstedt (Home Alone III), and Joseph Culp (Mad Men). His new video game & comic, Weatherworn, is an all-ages adventure following the young Pup and their astronaut grandfather Pap stranded on a dangerous world. A retro RPG about the seasons of life.

The Mahoning Valley Ballet Company (MVB) is a civic youth company that provides young dancers the opportunity to have access to additional performing experiences, master classes, guest artists, student choreography process, dance-related workshops, training assistance, and scholarship awards. The Mahoning Valley Ballet with Van Dyke and Company featuring the MVB has hosted twenty-four classical ballets and numerous showcases. Productions have included the favorite holiday tradition–The Nutcracker, Dracula, Coppelia, Graduation Ball, The Red Poppy, Giselle, and Cinderella. The Red Shoes, The Ugly Duckling and Lace, Ecole de Vie are three original cast-based ballets produced and directed by Joan Van Dyke with various collaborators. “Ordnung” an Amish ballet, is the current project created in the cast-based approach to choreography which identifies and explores societal and cultural issues within the narrative of the dance to inform and empower the dancers.
