Artist’s Statement: This newest installment to the Here Lies the Truth project by Li Chiao-Ping Dance was recently shared online on April 1, 2021; the full length of this new section is about 23 min. long, but we have excerpted from it for 2021 WDAA. Created remotely during the pandemic, a time of enormous challenges and individual and social struggles, the screendance reflects us, our commonalities, and differences. The work tackles one of today’s sticky topics, Truth, and poses questions of position, privilege, power, access, and equity. We aim to complicate the simplistic and simplify the complex through multiple lenses: gender, race, the color of one’s skin, their socio-economic condition, and more. Here Lies the Truth, created in this momentous time, explores truth, lies, and how these permeate our inner landscapes and built environment. When information is not always trustworthy, how can that affect our ability to believe our own truths? Full work link: https://vimeo.com/526954033. Pwd: hltt2021

*Choreographer’s Note: Special thanks to the dancers who have put in countless hours rehearsing via Zoom. One day, looking back, our memories of this past year will be balanced by an incredible sense of accomplishment at being innovative, resourceful, resilient, and thoughtful. I am immensely grateful to the dancers for their creative contributions to the making of Here Lies the Truth, but also for their (and other household members’) extra labor as camera persons, props/costume/set designers, and location scouts. I am looking forward to the next iteration of HERE LIES THE TRUTH, as we move towards developing it as an evening-length work with collaborators Cláudia Tatinge Nascimento and Douglas Rosenberg.
