Artist’s Statement: Stemming from traditional African roots, this solo piece features an active interplay between live drum and dance. The work delineates the unwavering intersection of music and dance in this culture. A demonstration of compelling music that lures a rhythmic movement sequence from a dancer, this work reveals the inseparable nature of the practices within this tradition.


Jenise Akilah Anthony, a native of Trinidad and Tobago, is an international dance educator, choreographer and performing artist well-known for her work within the African Diaspora. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor of African dance at SUNY Brockport. Her creative works have been presented at conferences worldwide including ACDA Gala, World Dance Alliance Assembly, COCO Dance, Trinidad and the Dance Africa Festival. With her passion for African-based work, and intensive study with African dance masters, Ms. Anthony founded Echoes of Africa, an international dance collective that reflects the heartbeat and energy of African culture through concert and community performance.

Echoes of Africa is an international dance collective that reflects the essence and energy of traditional and contemporary African culture through concert and community performance. Founded in 2017 by Trinidadian native, Jenise Akilah Anthony, the collective features a group of national and international choreographers, musicians, and performing artists who are passionate about sharing African culture worldwide. The collective has traveled to Trinidad and Tobago, Guinea, West Africa, Missouri, North Carolina, New York, and Texas to share creative works saturated with elements of this rich culture. With a strong focus on propelling diversity and inclusion with arts and culture, this group’s mission is to continue expanding audience viewership and acceptance of diverse cultures as a different voice in a shared conversation.  Honored to be a consistent source of cultural exchange the collective aims to continue global touring and performances at a national and international level.
